The 61-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and looks increasingly likely to leave.

Steidten has been sounding out replacements and has even met with one candidate.

Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim travelled to London to speak with West Ham and publicly confirmed the talks.

It has now been agreed that Steidten will stay away from the dressing room for now.

Steidten does spend long spells away from the London Stadium and the Rush Green training ground, owing to the nature of his role.

It is the Scot's second spell at West Ham, having rejoined in 2019, and led them to the Europa Conference League last season.

His exit, however, is likely to soon be official.

Julen Lopetegui and Paulo Fonseca are also in the running for the job at the London Stadium.

Sporting boss Amorim will not be the next Hammers manager, however, as he swiftly ruled himself out.

Amorim said: "So let's get the elephant out of the room and I'll talk about it once.

"The first thing is to say that the club was aware of my trip. It's important and changes the context.

"Then, talk about the cloak of secrecy that surrounded the trip.

"I secretly parked the car outside, secretly walked past 15 people, past people and took photographs and got on a plane to take away a little bit of this thing that was all done behind the club's back, that didn't happen.

"Obviously, my trip was a mistake, the timing was completely wrong, it didn't seem right at the time."

West Ham are currently eighth in the Premier League with three games left to go.
