Bayer Leverkusen just do not know when they are beaten under Xabi Alonso.

The recently-crowned German champions scored a sensational stoppage-time equaliser against Roma on Thursday night to book their place in the Europa League final and break new ground.

Josip Stanisic netted with the last kick of the game in the 97th minute to earn Leverkusen a 2-2 draw - after they had trailed by two goals - to keep the run going and seal a 4-2 aggregate victory over Roma.

Leverkusen's barely-believable season sets a new record for the longest unbeaten run across all competitions, since the introduction of UEFA club competitions, in European football history.

Benfica previously held the record, having gone 48 games unbeaten between 1963 and 1965.

No team from any of Europe's big five leagues - the Bundesliga, Ligue 1, La Liga, Premier League and Serie A - has ever had a record as good as Alonso's side across all competitions in a single season.

Should they win against Bochum on Sunday, they will be the first team ever to reach 50 matches unbeaten.

In the Premier League, Arsenal went 49 matches unbeaten from May 2003 to October 2004. However, that run included a number of defeats in other competitions.

It's been almost 12 months since Leverkusen last tasted defeat, losing to VFL Bochum on the final day of last season.

Since then, under the tutelage of former Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid star Alonso, Leverkusen have attracted admirers all around the world thanks to their entertaining brand of football.

But most impressive has been their ability to grind out results and never give in that has contributed to a historic campaign - with Stanisic's goal against Roma the 17th time they have scored in the 90th minute or later across all competitions this season.

Leverkusen caused a major upset by winning the Bundesliga crown last month, and are all set for an incredible treble.

Their first-ever league title came with five games to spare as they finally endedย Bayern Munich's domination in Germany, denying the giants their 12th straight domestic success.

They will now look to close out their stunning campaign with victory in the Europa League final inย Dublin on May 22, where they will meet Atalanta, and the DFB-Pokal final three days later against Kaiserslautern.

With two more league matches to navigate, they therefore have four games to go to end the entire season unbeaten.

"It really is a fairytale," former Bayern Munich and England star Owen Hargreaves told TNT Sports.

"It is really special. Something like this happens very very rarely, but to do it at the elite level [is incredible]. I think they are going to go unbeaten.

"Some things are just fate. I believe it is just written for this Bayer Leverkusen team to go unbeaten."

Asked for the reasons behind their unbeaten run, Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong said: "The team bond we have. No-one gives up. Everyone knows that if we go down, we will get a goal. OK we scored to make it 2-1 and we were going through, but we still wanted more.

"It is an amazing feeling. Especially to beat Roma. They were talking a lot so it was great to beat them."
