Charlton Athletic looked at deal for Sheffield United man before Stoke City swooped

Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer has revealed that the Addicks looked at signing midfielder Mark Duffy from Sheffield United in the summer transfer window before fellow Championship side Stoke City swooped in to complete a deal.

Charlton Athletic and Stoke City faced off on Saturday afternoon in the second week of the 2019/20 Championship season, with the Addicks prevailing victorious. Goals from Lyle Taylor, Chuks Aneke and Conor Gallagher were enough to overcome the Potters as Lee Bowyer’s side moved to a surprising six points from six, leaving them in 2nd place – just one goal behind Sheffield Wednesday at the top of the pile.

Speaking to the media before Saturday’s 3-1 win, Lee Bowyer revealed that he had looked at signing a player who ended up lining up against his side yesterday. The Charlton boss revealed that the club looked at bringing midfielder Mark Duffy in after it was revealed that parent club Sheffield United were willing to let him leave on loan this summer.

Bowyer said (quotes via the Stoke Sentinel):

“Stoke have strengthened their squad. They’ve got a good manager and they’ve got good team. They’ve got some good individuals obviously [Mark] Duffy’s just gone there from Sheffield United. A very good player, he’s someone that we were looking at.”

Despite not bringing in Duffy – who helped Sheffield United win promotion to the Premier League last season – the midfielder was not missed by the Addicks as they ran away with all three points on Saturday afternoon.

Duffy was a second half sub for Stoke, coming on for Ryan Woods.
