Ex-West Brom, Derby County and Preston North End defender set for trial with Charlton Athletic

A report from the South London Press has said that former West Brom, Derby County and Preston North End defender Tyrone Mears will join Championship outfit Charlton Athletic on trial this week.

Having sold Anfernee Dijksteel to Middlesbrough late on in the summer transfer window, Chris Solly is the only senior right-back at Charlton Athletic. Now, it has been reported that the Addicks will look to bring in a new right-back to provide more cover and competition, with Lee Bowyer revealing that Tyrone Mears will come in to try and earn a contract with the club.

Speaking to the South London Press regarding Mears, Bowyer said:

“I played with Tyrone at West Ham and he will train with us for a week. We will just look at him fitness-wise. He is a fit lad anyway and still quick – he was rapid when I played with him. He can’t be far off it.”

Mears is available on a free transfer after his release from West Brom at the end of last season and would provide more Championship experience to Bowyer’s ranks. The 36-year-old started his career with Manchester City in the youth academy, before leaving to link up with Preston North End. Mears spent four years with Preston, scoring four goals in 75 games along the way.

After leaving Preston in 2006, Mears has gone on to play for West Ham, Derby County, Marseille (loan) Burnley, Bolton Wanderers, Seattle Sounders, Atlanta United, Minnesota United and West Brom. Now, he will be hoping to prove himself in training with Charlton Athletic as he looks to earn himself a deal.
