Charlie Austin discusses how Slaven Bilic influenced his decision to join West Brom

West Brom striker Charlie Austin has revealed that a conversation with Slaven Bilic persuaded him to make the move to the Baggies in the summer transfer window.

Earlier this summer, striker Charlie Austin made the move from Premier League side Southampton to link up with West Brom and Slaven Bilic, making the move to the Hawthorns after falling down the pecking order under Ralph Hassnhutl.

Austin came in to bring some more attacking power to Bilic’s side after they lost loaned in man Dwight Gayle and Jay Rodriguez. Now, the 30-year-old has been speaking on Stan Collymore’s Last Word podcast about how talks with Bilic persuaded him to make the move to West Brom. He said:

“Talks had been going on in the afternoon with West Brom. Talks had been going on with several other clubs, are we going to do it, are we not? I spoke to my wife Bianca, I spoke to my dad. Then I spoke to the manager, and he sold it to me if I’m honest.

“He said Charlie how are you? We scored so many goals last year, so many balls in the box. I’m not going to change anything about you, I want you to come here, be my number nine and score me loads of goals like you have done in your career.

“He said I’ll get the service from the lads to you, and we’re going to have a good season together. I must’ve been on the phone two minutes and I put the phone down and said to my wife – I’m going to do it.”
