Defoe Linked But Deal Unlikely
Wednesday, 26th May 2021 13:20

Town have been linked with veteran Rangers striker Jermain Defoe, however, it appears a move which is unlikely to happen.

Defoe joined Rangers on loan from Bournemouth for the second half of 2019/20 before signing on a free transfer last summer. He scored seven times in five starts - three in the league - and 15 sub appearances during 2020/21.

The 38-year-old is in talks with the Glasgow giants regarding a new deal but with Football Insider reporting that Town are trying to lure him to Portman Road.

Defoe’s name has been linked with the Blues on social media for a number of weeks and while we understand he has been discussed as a potential target, it’s not a deal which is likely to happen.

Town are looking to recruit players of a higher profile than is the norm at League One level but it seems likely that Defoe’s wage requirements would put him out of the running given the SCMP limitations the Blues are working within.

Defoe is reportedly on £30,000-a-week at Rangers although will have to take a pay cut if he wants to remain at Ibrox this summer.

The Londoner was with Charlton’s academy before joining West Ham where he made his senior breakthrough having spent time on loan at Bournemouth.

Spells with Tottenham (twice), Portsmouth, Toronto FC, Sunderland and back at Dean Court on a permanent basis followed as well as 57 England caps and 20 international goals.

'The Londoner was with Charlton's academy before joining West Ham where he made his senior breakthrough having spent time on loan at Bournemouth.' So what relevance is this to this non story? Less cut and paste please gents.

I'd rather sign Will Norris back on loan and he was terrible.

I guess it's only paper talk type stuff but moving on two 35 year olds and then signing a 38 year old would be a tad contradictory!

It is our equivalent of US Phoenix signing Drogba i suppose. Carberry I feel it most odd that you are criticising the editorial content of this website. After all it is offered at a very good rate of subscription to us all.

Defoe and Jeffers upfront next season then. Should've kept Chambo and Ward and we could've changed our name to Dads Army FC

If we are going to go down this ageing striker route, I'd rather we signed Cameron Jerome, who showed what he can do in a 'one up front', good footballing side, in League One, last season. And that's despite his history up the road.

Interesting and a name that had caught my eye but 38 is too old even for a guy to play 20 minutes a game for one season. But if people think we are going to get out of league one with players this summer that will have premier quality in 3-5 they must be joking. We will need some short term high impact players along the way. at £30k a week though I would suggest we are miles out of this one even with the promise of coaching experience etc. Perhaps not this one but I expect one or two old heads of this type. Ive mentioned Noble before and I still think we might get value out of experience and quality, albeit only to get us out of league one

So the same people who were saying a few weeks ago that theyd have loved us to sign Drogba, who's 43, are now saying Defoe, at 38 is too old? Typical of how fickle some are. Ik not saying by any means that I'd want us to sign him, but if anyone thinks we should only be signing younger players, then you know little about getting a team together. You need some experienced players. And let's face it, if hes good enough for rangers to want to try to keep him, then surely hed be good enough for league1? End of the day tho, it's all immaterial as we couldnt afford his wages anyway. So pretty much a non story

Uefa1981, there's always room for improvement. How many times have you read stories that include a cut and paste of a previous one? It's a well meant nudge, shame you and others have taken umbrage over it. It is, by its very own admission, a non-story and yet includes comprehensive biographical details of a player who isn't coming to the club. But there again you are getting it for free!

Wow, immediate negativity.

I called this possibility re Defoe weeks ago, as this Ownership group have a methodology and one thing they do is bring in a 'name'. Given our Manager is not a 'name' himself we should expect at least an attempt at a big 'name' to come in....and let's not be mad and think they will be in their prime!

Defoe fits the model, is far from a crazy notion, and would surely add some much needed experience, work ethic, and goal scoring (you never lose it...ask Rangers). Can see this happening as a player-coach role to get past the rules.

This is not so crazy and could work !

Can't wait for real recruiting to take place, I still don't think it will be plain sailing but then again we have enough coaches to make a team LOL. God I hope PC's game plan comes to fruition or we will be the laughing stock of the EFL.
